We are looking for a Staff Scientist (permanent position) to join my research group at Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology UJ in Kraków and take a leading role in some of the most exciting international consortia in (meta-)genomics.

What you will do:
- Lead Global Collaborations: Coordinate our group’s activities and collaborations within the prestigious MetaSUB Consortium (metasub.org) and the MAQC Society (themaqc.org).
- Run gCSD: Organize and coordinate the annual global City Sampling Day events right here in Kraków (Urząd Miasta Krakowa) (metasub.org/projects/gcsd/).
- Drive Innovation with AI: Leverage the power of the Gaia AI Factory to develop a city microbiome digital twin, paving the way toward a real-time City/Global Pathogen & AMR Early Warning System.

Staff Scientists are highly qualified specialists who demonstrate a strong commitment to research and solving complex problems, but do not wish to lead their own teams or research projects. Individuals in this role play a key role in ensuring substantive and technical continuity within the research team. Their task is to maintain and share specialized knowledge (know-how). The Staff Scientist supports all group members and the group leader (PI) in managing the group; for example, during the PI’s absence, the person in this position takes over some organizational responsibilities, ensuring the smooth operation of the team. This position involves employment for a 3-month probationary period and a 9-month fixed-term contract. Upon successful completion of this period, the employment is extended. Research staff are assigned to specific groups, but in the event that a group is disbanded, they may be transferred to other teams.
Required skills:
• at least 7 years of research experience (at least one peer-reviewed article from 2019 or earlier),
• at least one original scientific publication in which the Candidate (F/M) is the lead author,
• h-index: 8 (according to Scopus) or higher,
• fluency in English,
• programming skills in R, Python, Perl, C++, or similar languages,
• ability to design and optimize analytical pipelines and data exploration workflows using tools such as NextFlow or Snakemake,
• knowledge of machine learning methods applied in omics data analysis,
• ability to work with HPC environments,
• ability to work in a team,
• ability to solve problems and find solutions,
• ability to handle stress and remain composed in difficult situations,
• excellent communication skills ‒ both scientific and interpersonal,
• strong work ethic and commitment to upholding the highest ethical standards
.
Desirable skills:
• metagenomic data analysis,
• multi-omic integrative analysis,
• identification of drug resistance markers, drug resistance modeling.
