Description

Position Overview

The Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in computational biology and bioinformatics under the mentorship of Dr. Aranyak Goswami.

This position focuses on developing computational frameworks at the intersection of host genetics, microbiome science, and precision medicine, with applications in animal health and translational biology. The successful candidate will work on integrating multi-omics datasets to identify biomarkers and infer causal relationships underlying complex traits.

Research in the lab emphasizes statistical genomics, causal inference, and machine learning, including emerging approaches such as graph-based modeling and deep learning for biological systems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a related quantitative field
Strong academic record (GPA ≥ 3.5 preferred)
Proficiency in R and/or Python
Experience working in a Linux/Unix environment
Strong motivation to work at the interface of genomics, microbiome science, and data science
Preferred Skills (Not All Required)

Candidates with strength in at least two of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:

Statistical Genomics: GWAS, heritability estimation (e.g., GREML), genetic correlation
Microbiome Analysis: 16S rRNA or shotgun metagenomics data processing and interpretation
Causal Inference: Mendelian Randomization or related frameworks
Machine Learning: Predictive modeling, deep learning (e.g., VAEs, attention-based models such as TabNet), or high-dimensional data analysis
Data Engineering: Handling, preprocessing, and integration of large-scale genomic datasets
High-Performance Computing: Experience with HPC-based workflows
Eligibility Note

For this recruitment cycle, priority will be given to candidates currently residing in the United States with valid F-1 or J-1 visa status due to administrative considerations.

English Language Proficiency

For international applicants, proof of English language proficiency is required in accordance with the University of Arkansas Graduate School policies. Acceptable tests include:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

Specific score requirements and any exemptions will follow the University of Arkansas Graduate School guidelines.
