Senior Staff Scientist – AI & Machine Learning
University of Kentucky

The University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center (MCC) is seeking a highly motivated senior staff member to join the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BBSR). This position supports cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical cancer research through the application of advanced artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and statistical methodologies to high-dimensional and multimodal datasets, such as genomics, single-cell, spatial, imaging, and clinical data.
The candidate will collaborate with MCC investigators to design and implement statistically rigorous, AI-driven analyses that ensure studies are methodologically sound, reproducible, and aligned with biological and clinical objectives. Responsibilities include advising on experimental design, endpoints, cohort selection, and feasibility for AI-enabled studies; applying and refining state-of-the-art AI and machine learning methods to large-scale multimodal datasets; developing and optimizing reproducible analytical workflows; evaluating model performance, robustness, and interpretability; contributing AI expertise to grant proposals; and mentoring junior staff and trainees in best practices for data analysis and reproducible research.
The position requires a master’s degree in computer science, biostatistics, bioinformatics, or a related field. Demonstrated expertise in AI and machine learning methods, proficiency in Python and/or R, experience with high-performance computing environments, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams are required. Experience in cancer-related research is preferred but not required.
As a National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive cancer center, MCC offers a unique and exciting opportunity to engage with multidisciplinary teams of scientists with diverse backgrounds in cancer cell biology and signaling, genomic instability, epigenetics and metabolism, population-based cancer prevention and control, drug discovery, delivery and translational therapeutics. MCC is nestled in the scenic heart of the Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The city of Lexington is an ideal location to experience the work-life balance that MCC and the University strives to provide to its employees.
