Medvedev Lab (medvedev-lab.cs.ucf.edu/) is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join the Department of Computer Science at the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL) to pursue a PhD in Computer Science (with minor in Bioinformatics) and conduct research in the fields of Computational Structural Biology, Bioinformatics and Computational Biophysics. Research projects include, but are not limited to, protein structure prediction using state-of-the-art AI-based tools, small-molecule docking, database development and maintenance, molecular dynamics simulations, evolutionary analysis of protein domains.
Required:
1. BSc or MSc degree (or equivalent) in computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related field.
2. Interest in solving biological questions using computational approaches
3. Strong background in computer science or computational biology/chemistry
4. Strong Python and R programming skills
5. Basic web-development skills (HTML/CSS/JavaScript…)
5. Fluency in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills
We will value:
1. A basic understanding of molecular biology, structural biology or biochemistry
2. Experience with a Python web frameworks
3. Basic SQL (SQLite/Postgres) or simple REST API usage
4. Experience writing or co-authoring peer-reviewed research papers
Minimum Admission Criteria for PhD Program (Department of Computer Science, UCF):
- 3.0 GPA in the MS or BS degree
- TOEFL 80 (only for international students)
