Description

NEC Laboratories Europe (NLE) is looking for a student currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in Computer Science, AI, Biomedical Informatics, or a related field. The intern will support activities in microbiome studies (method development, supporting an EU-funded project with clinicians). The internship includes the following work items: • Revising a manuscript on a DL-based method for bias-informed predictions from gut microbiome data for resubmission in a high-tier journal (e.g. Bioinformatics) • Ensuring reproducibility of results • Participating in refactoring the code base with staff research engineers • Apply in-house and state of the art methods to predict rheumatic disease status from clinical, microbiome and genotype data • Present the results of the analyses in front of various stakeholders (clinicians, bioinformaticians etc.) NEC Laboratories in Heidelberg (Germany) provides an excellent working environment supporting individual creativity as well as strong teamwork. Our working language is English. Although some visits in Heidelberg will be necessary, the internship can largely be done remotely anywhere in Germany.


Qualifications

Required Skills: • Proficient in Python and experience with Pytorch • Solid understanding of Deep Learning • Hands-on experience on analysing real world clinical / microbiome / genotype data is a plus • Best practice in coding to ensure reproducibility of the results (versioning, documentation, testing…) • Interest in clinical studies and working with clinicians • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across interdisciplinary teams Benefits: • Work in a professional industrial environment • Co-authorship in a high-quality journal • Experience working on real world clinical data with worldwide experts in rheumatology
