Description

Dr. Shibiao Wan’s Lab ( wan-mlab.github.io ) at University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) has multiple open positions in all levels of postdocs, PhD students and master students. UNMC is ranking 8th in Primary Care and 58th in Research of the Best Medical Schools in US. Wan Lab is focusing on artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), bioinformatics, and computational biology, especially in single cell analysis, multi-omics analysis, spatial transcriptomics, cancer research, precision medicine, and intelligent healthcare. With more than 14 years of experience in machine learning, bioinformatics, and computational biology, Dr. Wan has published >50 articles in prestigious journals like Genome Research, Nature Communications, Science Advances, Circulation Research, Briefings in Bioinformatics, and Bioinformatics. Dr. Wan is an Editorial Board Member for a series of high-impact journals like Briefings in Functional Genomics, BMC Bioinformatics, Heliyon, Discover Oncology, International Journal of Microbiology, and PeerJ Computer Science. He is a TPC member for >20 machine learning related international conferences including IEEE ICTAI. Dr. Wan is also a reviewer for >50 prestigious journals including Nature Communications, Nature Computational Science, Cancer Research, Nucleic Acids Research, Genome Medicine, IEEE TNNLS, and Briefings in Bioinformatics. More details can be found in our lab website at wan-mlab.github.io.

Specific eligibility criteria and qualifications are elaborated below. The candidates will be provided with abundant opportunities of working in interdisciplinary research at UNMC and beyond. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Please send your CV or other documents to the email at swan@unmc.edu, with the email title as "Prospective Postdoc/PhD student/etc". I will contact you only if you are qualified for the next interview process. Thanks for your interest in our lab.

Qualifications

Prospective Postdocs:

The prospective postdocs should have a PhD degree in a related field, and have research experience in bioinformatics, machine learning and computational biology. Preferences will be given to those who have research experience in single-cell analysis, multi-omics analysis, spatial transcriptomics, cancer research, intelligent healthcare, or precision medicine. In addition, they should demonstrate their capabilities in machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science, statistics or other related skills. A strong programming capability is necessary. The candidates should list their publications together with their research experience. The stipends for postdocs are commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Prospective PhD Students:

PhD students are fully funded. Ideally, the candidates should be trained in both computational and biological backgrounds. Preferences will be given to those who have research experience in single-cell analysis, multi-omics analysis, spatial transcriptomics, cancer research, intelligenth healthcare, and precision medicine. Some basic requirements are listed as follows:
1. A candidate should have a bachelor or higher degree in any quantitative science or engineering discipline, e.g., bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, statistics, informatics, automation, electronic engineering, biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc.
2. For candidates with biological training backgrounds, they should demonstrate their capabilities in machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science or any related skills. For candidates with computational backgrounds, they should demonstrate their capabilities in developing or applying computational methods into addressing biological or molecular problems. For other candidates, they should demonstrate their potentials in learning both very quickly.
3. The candidates should demonstrate their proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages such as R, Python, Linux, Matlab, Perl, etc.

Prospective Master Students:

Prospective master students are also fully funded. They should be self-motivated and demonstrate their capabilities to learn fast and adapt to new circumstances quickly. Ideally, the candidates should demonstrate their proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages such as R, Python, Linux, Matlab, Perl, etc. Exceptional candidates in other backgrounds without any programming experience will also be considered.
