The incumbent will lead the development and implementation of a metagenomic/genomic analysis pipeline, database, and web interface for use in plant and animal disease diagnostics.
Responsibilities include: to lead and coordinate the development, implementation, and maintenance of a computational infrastructure for genomics/metagenomics-based plant and animal pathogen identification. This infrastructure will consist of a computational pipeline, a database, web interface, and visualization tools to make results understandable to end users with no genomics background. The postdoctoral associate will collaborate closely with faculty and graduate students at Virginia Tech and collaborators at other institutions in computer science, bioinformatics, plant pathology, and veterinary medicine developing the computational infrastructure. The postdoctoral associate will have the primary responsibility of implementing the developed software for routine use by a genomics/metagenomics-based pathogen identification service center that is being developed by the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech.
Required:
● PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, or related field awarded no more than four years prior to the effective date of the appointment with a minimum of one year of eligibility remaining.
● Linux command line proficiency
● Python and R language proficiency
● Familiarity with SQL and relational databases
● Familiarity with website development
● Effective communication skills
● Experience with working in interdisciplinary teams
Preferred:
● Bioinformatics pipeline development experience
● Rust and/or additional computer language proficiency
● Metagenome/genome-based pathogen classification and identification experience
● Linux system administration proficient
