Description

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) is dedicated to pursuing world-class research and delivering high-quality education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine and health technology. We conduct internationally acclaimed basic and applied research.

The Quantitative Cellular Communication lab, at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) in Tampere University is seeking a Doctoral Researcher to study the long-term electrophysiological dynamics in epithelial tissues in response to light-controlled stimulations. The position will be full-time and filled for a fixed-term period of two years. The workplace is located at Kauppi Campus, Tampere University.

The Quantitative Cellular Communication research is at the interface between physics and biology, where we combine state-of-the-art tools of genetics, imaging, machine learning, and computational modeling to achieve mechanistic understandings of biological phenomena. We have enjoyed collaborations with many research groups within Tampere University as well as in Paris, France.

Job description

Your task will be to develop statistical models of epithelial tissues to simultaneously identify the driving kinetic factors of the tissue's long-term behaviors in response to varying environmental fluctuations. You will work closely with experimentalists from our partner groups to interpret in vitro data on tissue behaviors, in particular the calcium responses, to light-induced stimulations. The captured calcium dynamics to stimuli of different scales are then combined by integrating the principles of statistical biophysics and machine learning to characterize the trajectory of tissue behaviors over time.

The selected candidate will be able to focus on his/her doctoral research full-time, get supervision, and implement new ideas as a part of a research team in the positive and multidisciplinary environment of the MET faculty. The selected candidate must, later on, be accepted into a doctoral program of our Faculty. Please visit the admissions page for more information on eligibility requirements.

In addition to the doctoral dissertation, the duties of a doctoral researcher may include participation in education or other faculty tasks that support your studies.

Requirements:

Master’s degree in Physics/Biophysics, Computer Science, or Signal Processing
Methodological and theoretical skills in statistics and programming
Strong experience with data analysis and modeling
Fluency in English
Enthusiastic to work with experimental data
Willingness to teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary, and boldly forward-looking community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, and learner-centeredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.
