The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Metabolomics. The successful candidate will be appointed to a full-time probationary (tenure-track) appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, probationary or tenured. The rank and tenure status will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be appointed to the department that most appropriately fits their expertise with potential cross appointment(s) in other relevant departments.
Metabolomics is an area of research that can be used to study both healthy populations as well as many different acute and chronic diseases and the goal of this position is to build capacity and leadership in this critical research area. Identifying, characterizing and following the small molecules in populations and patient cohorts provides a functional readout on the combined molecular, cellular and system-wide processes. The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong research program focused on any area of metabolomics research and should also demonstrate a strong technical ability to acquire, set up and maintain shared instrumentation.
In accordance with the CRC program for Tier 2 Chairs, candidates must be exceptional emerging world-class researchers (i.e., candidates must have less than 10 years of experience as an active researcher in their field at the time of nomination) who have demonstrated particular research creativity and have demonstrated the potential to achieve international recognition in their fields within five to ten years. As chairholders, candidates must have the potential to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers, and be proposing an original, innovative research program of high quality. The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry has emerging and established research foci in sustainable healthy aging, infection and immunity, cancer research and neurobiology. Within this context there is a special emphasis on biomedical research and teaching with a focus on human health and disease. Relevant to this CRC position, the Basic Medical Science and Clinical Departments within Schulich provide key support and expertise in basic, clinical, and applied aspects related to the biochemistry, cellular physiology and molecular biology of cells, microorganisms, and systems. The Faculty supports excellence in: Research and scholarship; Training and mentorship of undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral/clinical fellows by providing hands-on, technical laboratory and research experience; and Teaching of undergraduate Bachelor of Medical Science (BMs) students, graduate students and professional students in Medicine and Dentistry.
The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is home to several research facilities and state-of-the-art core facilities at Western that have been revitalized through recent major investments. At the molecular level, the School has the London Regional Genomics facility that support genomics and transcriptomics at the single cell level; the BioCORE that contains facilities for Mass Spectrometry for proteomics, NMR facilities for both protein and small molecule characterization and facilities for biophysical characterization of proteins and metabolites; and the Flow Cytometry and the Molecular Pathology Core. At the macro level these facilities include a Biomedical Research Facility for animal housing, an Animal Cognition and Behavioural Neuroscience Core, a Translational Imaging Research Facility, and an Imaging Pathogens for Knowledge Translation (ImPaKT) Facility with Containment and 3 cell culture laboratories and animal housing. The successful candidate will hold a PhD with advanced training in biochemistry, chemistry or closely related area and a demonstrated ability to both drive their own independent research program as well as collaborate with other researchers. The successful candidate’s research interests will be supported by a record of impactful and significant publications and research accomplishments as assessed by the principles of DORA. They should be a recognized early career national or international leader as exemplified by invited lectures and/or conference symposia as appropriate for their discipline and career stage. Demonstrated ability to secure career-stage appropriate external peer-reviewed funding (e.g., CIHR, NSERC, NIH etc.) would be an asset. Successful candidates will have a record of incorporating EDID principles into their research, teaching and/or mentorship.
