The University of Antwerp’s Adrem Data Lab from the Department of Computer Science is looking for a full-time specialist staff member expert as a database engineer.

The Laukens group of the Adrem Data Lab is a diverse and vibrant group of more than 20 Bioinformaticians, Computational Biologists and Data Scientists who all share a passion for working with (bio)medical data.

The position includes the following tasks:

- As a scientific database developer, you will have a range of responsibilities, including the development of a novel database for complex molecular data and a prototype API for users to interact with the database. In addition, you will set up and maintain a web server to house the database.
- You will provide technical support to students, PhD students and third parties utilizing the developed resource.
- You will collaborate closely with interdisciplinary scientists to integrate the database into a medically important resource that can have a positive societal impact globally, with a particular impact in low-and middle-income countries.
- In your role, you take instructions and regulations into account with a view to achieving predefined objectives.

What we offer:

- We offer an appointment for a period of 1 year with the possibility of an extension.
- You will receive a gross monthly salary within pay band 5.1-7.1 of the pay scales of the Administrative and Technical Your entry-level grade (usually grade 5) depends on your relevant professional experience.
- You will receive meal vouchers, ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, group insurance, an income protection insurance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- We offer flexible working hours.
- You will have up to 40 days of annual leave and additional leave for 1 week when the university is closed, between Christmas and New Year.
- You will do most of your work at Campus Middelheim in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.

Qualifications

- You have a Bachelor or Master in Computer Science/Informatics/Bioinformatics or equivalent professional competences gained through prior work experience.
- You have a solid understanding of relational database management systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
- You have knowledge about Data Science, Python (Django, Redis), Docker and NextFlow. An additional strength is knowledge about vector databases (e.g. Milvus).
- You have either experience or a keen interest in working with molecular data and multidisciplinary teams.
- You have good oral and written knowledge of English.
- You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
- You have strong organisational skills, communicate effectively and can deliver results on-time.
