A postdoctoral training position is currently available in the Computational Structural Biology Unit led by Dr. Lucy Forrest, DPhil, as part of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). Dr. Forrest’s group uses computational approaches to improve our understanding of the structure and function of membrane proteins, and their involvement in neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s Diseases. The project will involve the design and implementation of software applications specific to computational structural biology of membrane proteins, and/or their application to relevant problems in structural biology, including membrane protein folding, symmetry, and mechanistic studies. Opportunities include development and testing of novel functionalities for existing software packages and databases, as well as development of new tools.

The NINDS Intramural Research Program is located on the Bethesda, Maryland campus in the USA and offers a scientifically diverse and stimulating international environment as well as a wide array of high-quality training opportunities for scientists early in their careers. The funding for this position is stable and offers the trainee wide latitude in the design and pursuit of their research project. The successful candidate will have access to a Top 500 high-performance computing resource available through NIH’s Center for Information Technology.

Candidates should have, or be close to obtaining, a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Computational Chemistry/Physics/Biophysics and/or Mathematics. Demonstrated experience in programming is essential, knowledge of python or C++ an advantage. Candidates with a background in biochemistry and structural biology are particularly encouraged to apply. The ability to learn how to use new software and quickly become expert in its use, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to work semi-independently are required.
