The Hu lab in the Department of Biochemistry at Western University, Canada has multiple fully funded MSc/PhD positions in artificial intelligence for bioinformatics. Western University ranks within the top 10 research-intensive universities in Canada and top 200 in the world (The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023). Dr. Hu is a Canada Research Chair in Computational Approaches to Health Research and has excellent experience in mentoring trainees at different levels. Many of his trainees have received international and national awards, accepted into top graduate schools (like Oxford, Cambridge, UCLA, CMU, Toronto, UBC, McGill), employed in high-tech companies (like Google, Microsoft, Amazon), and landed tenure-track professor position with nomination for Canada Research Chair. The successful candidates can be registered in Collaborative Specialization in Machine Learning in Health and Biomedical Sciences (uwo.ca/sci/datascience/graduate/collaborative-specialization-ml-health-biomedical.html) in the Hu lab through the Department of Biochemistry.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate is expected to join an interdisciplinary team to apply and develop innovative deep learning algorithms to analyze multimodal data in one or two of the areas: genomic data integration, single cell RNA-seq and spatial transcriptomics, and drug design and discovery.


Qualifications

1). A minimum BSc degree in broadly defined life science/medicine, bioinformatics, chemistry, or other quantitative areas (e.g. physics, biostatistics, statistics, computer science, electrical engineering and math). For candidates with only BSc degree but want to apply for PhD program, they can be transferred into PhD program in the end of first year and all the courses taken in the first year will be counted as a part of the PhD program.
2). Some background life science and /or chemistry and proficient in using different deep learning architectures in PyTorch.
3). have solid programming skills (R, Python and/or C, etc.), and acquaintance with Linux.
4). GPA>80%.
5). Strong written and communication skills.
6). meet one of the following English test requirement:
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 250, computer based; internet based test (iBT) 90, with no individual score lower than 22; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): 6.5 out of 9;
