Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is seeking faculty candidates in the area of systems biology who employ contemporary technologies and analytical tools.
Candidates will be interested in innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to important problems in biology and medicine using approaches in chemistry, synthetic biology, genome engineering, data science, machine learning, large-scale database architecture, statistics, network science, scalable computing, and multiscale analysis with a focus on technology development. Example areas of interest include aging, cancer biology, cell and developmental biology, immunology, microbial evolution, and molecular systems biology. However, highly qualified candidates in any relevant discipline of research in systems biology will be considered.
ISB’s multi-disciplinary scientific staff tightly integrates biologists, physicists, chemists, physicians, engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians, complemented by an extensive array of academic, clinical, and industrial collaborators. ISB’s computational capabilities are in biological modeling and simulation, data mining, statistical methods for bioinformatics, genomics, and proteomics, electronic health records analytics and the design of large-scale biological databases. ISB's technical capacities include genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, imaging, and single-cell analyses. Accordingly, ISB is equipped with an impressive technology and computation infrastructure to support all aspects of systems biology and systems medicine. ISB is affiliated with Providence, one of the largest not-for-profit health care systems in the United States. This affiliation gives ISB access to unique resources including clinical trials, patient samples, electronic health records (EHR), and the ability to translate discoveries into clinical applications that benefit patients.
ISB is a collaborative and cross-disciplinary non-profit biomedical research organization based in Seattle, and focuses on some of the most pressing issues in human health, including COVID and other infectious diseases, chronic and non-communicable diseases, brain health, cancer, and aging.

ISB was created by genomics pioneer Dr. Leroy Hood in 2000 as the first-of-its-kind institute dedicated to systems biology. Dr. Hood is one of 20 individuals elected to all three National Academies, and was presented the National Medal of Science in 2013.
Renowned scientist Dr. Jim Heath has been leading ISB as president and professor since 2018. Heath also has the position of Professor of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology at UCLA, and he has directed the National Cancer Institute-funded NSB Cancer Center since 2005. Formerly, he was the Elizabeth W. Gilloon Professor of Chemistry at Caltech, and served as co-director of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at UCLA until 2017. He has received several awards and honors, including the Irving Weinstein Award from the American Association of Cancer Researchers, and the Sackler Prize in the Physical Sciences. He was named one of the top seven innovators in the world by Forbes Magazine.
Heath has founded or cofounded several companies, including PACT Pharma, Integrated Diagnostics, Indi Molecular, CTI Molecular Imaging (acquired by Siemens in 2005), Sofie Biosciences, Isoplexis, and NanoSys.

ISB has a strong commitment to education and outreach, with the explicitly stated goal of creating opportunities for students and educators from underrepresented groups. Our efforts have created professional development and leadership training opportunities, as well as curriculum materials to teach science as it is practiced, using a problem-driven and a cross-disciplinary approach.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. or equivalent and have demonstrated the ability or potential to conduct independent research, and have a strong publication record to attract external research funding. The candidate should have a clearly articulated research vision and program, a plan for fundraising from federal (NIH, NSF, etc.) and other sources (philanthropy, foundations, etc.), and a mentoring plan for postdocs and students at all levels.
