Description

The Role:
As part of our vision, Moderna is committed to invest in R&D to further expand our impact on patients. We are building an independent research and business unit for genomic medicines, called Moderna Genomics (mGx) based in Technology Square, Cambridge, MA. mGx will be an innovation engine for the company focused on discovering and delivering the next generation of in vivo gene editing and non-viral gene therapies. It is our intention to be an industry leader in genomic medicines.
Reporting to the Director of Quantitative Biology, the Principal Scientist, Quantitative Biology, Moderna Genomics will be a key member of a high performing team developing next generation gene editing technology within Moderna Genomics. You will be an innovative and collaborative computational biologist with expertise in gene editing analytics, broad skills in the area of mining genomics and high learning agility. In collaboration with experimental scientists, you will develop and apply computational methods to analyze large-scale custom datasets generated by the team to discover transformative gene editing technologies. The candidate must thrive in a fast pace environment with high expectations. Integrity, ability to share experimental issues and troubleshoot, curiosity, collaborative spirit, respect for people, exemplary work ethic and setting the bar high are key values to thrive in our Team.

Here’s What You Will Do:
Lead creation and implementation of custom bioinformatics data pipelines to analyze results from novel and established next-generation sequencing (NGS) assays.
Collaborate with our Gene Editing Platform team to plan and develop new NGS-based screening methods.
Evaluate gRNA on-target/off-target effects
Process, analyze, and interpret data from a wide variety of research and preclinical projects to develop rigorous hypotheses.
Bespoke sequence analysis for custom applications
Lead and mentor junior scientists to collectively achieve team goals.
Collaborate closely with experimental scientists to ensure that data is effectively utilized for high level impact.

Qualifications

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:
Ph.D. (or comparable experience) in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related quantitative discipline.
Strong scientific background, including an understanding of molecular biology and NGS techniques
Experience working with multiple sequence alignments and large sequence datasets.
Familiarity with common bioinformatics tools for NGS data analysis
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Strong coding skills using Python, R, git, Jupyter
Proficient with high performance computing, preferably on public clouds (i.e. AWS, GCP, Azure)
Experience with statistical and machine learning methods with large-scale dataset
