Essential Functions
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas, San Antonio (UTSA) invites applications for open-rank tenure-track faculty positions starting in Fall 2023 in Bioinformatics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Accelerators.
• For the Bioinformatics position, we invite applications from exceptional candidates in the areas of applications of Artificial Intelligence or machine learning techniques in research areas such as computational biology, systems biology, biomedical image analysis, and data engineering including data acquisition, storage, organization, analysis, or visualization, and other emerging areas that would complement existing strengths within the Department. The preferred candidate needs to demonstrate knowledge in cancer research, computational neuroscience, infectious disease, precision therapeutics, health disparities, and -omics data analysis. We are seeking colleagues to foster collaborative research, education, and outreach and create transdisciplinary areas of knowledge that will advance the field of neuroscience human performance at our College of Science and Biomedical Engineering at the Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design. This initiative is integral to the Clustered and Connected Hiring Program for Bioinformatics and will expand collaborative research from Mathematics, Neuroscience, Developmental and Regenerative Biology, and the School of Data Science. Candidates may hold joint appointments in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Information Systems, CyManII, and School of Data Science.
• For the AI accelerator position, outstanding candidates at the Assistant Professor level are invited for a position in “AI Accelerators”. AI's tremendous capability depends on the development and deployment of lightweight, efficient AI models that can be executed on resource-constrained hardware. The move towards bigger models requires ever-growing datasets and compute budgets, which incur massive energy bills over the model deployment lifecycle. It is crucial to design new AI accelerators and custom hardware (eg: digital accelerators, custom ASICs, mixed-signal chip design, emerging technologies) that can support the rapid growth of the models and reduce the overall carbon footprint. Successful candidates will need to demonstrate (1) a solid research agenda, publication record, and external funding capability in AI accelerators and related areas, (2) the ability to excel in undergraduate and graduate education, and (3) a commitment to inclusion and diversity. The candidate will be also affiliated with the MATRIX AI Consortium which serves as the nexus for leading AI innovators to perform transdisciplinary research, engage in high-impact partnerships, and provide thought leadership and domain expertise to solve intractable problems in AI.'Candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with a rich ecosystem of MATRIX partners from computer science, psychology, biomedical engineering, and neuroscience, as well as with local research organizations such as the UT Health San Antonio and Southwest Research Institute.
Required Qualifications
• Doctorate in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, bioinformatics, or related field by the time of hire
• Outstanding academic credentials that clearly demonstrate the ability to conduct independent and successful research in their areas of expertise, and to build cross-disciplinary research programs.
• Excellent communications skills with a commitment to engage in a high-quality undergraduate and graduate education in areas of electrical and computer engineering.
• Responsibilities for the position include research, teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and program development.
• Demonstrate ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of diverse urban populations and support the University's commitment to thrive as a Hispanic Serving Institution and a model for student success.
Preferred Qualifications
• For assistant professor candidates, demonstration of a solid research agenda, high-impact publications, and external funding capability are preferred.
• Experience in an academic supervisory capacity/leadership position.
• Experience with ABET accreditation.
• Knowledge of innovative curriculum development and implementation.
• Experience with fiscal management responsibilities.
• Leadership in professional organizations.
