The Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for the position of Director, Division of Informatics. The successful candidate will be an Associate or Full Professor position on either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area of Biomedical Informatics, Bioinformatics, Clinical Informatics, Computer Science, or Data Science, with extensive research experience in the health sciences. Applicants must have an M.D and/or Ph.D or equivalent degree.

Teaching responsibilities may include a strong commitment to education, teaching, and mentoring of students. DBEI currently offers a Masters in Biomedical Informatics (MBMI) and a Certificate in Biomedical Informatics which are managed by the Institute of Biomedical Informatics (IBI). There is interest in building a PhD program in Informatics. The successful candidate will have opportunities to help grow these programs and lead the primary Informatics faculty who will be central to their success.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include having an internationally recognized record of scholarship and demonstrating successful academic research leadership experience. The Division of Informatics, formed in 2017, currently has 8 primary faculty and resides within a vibrant multidisciplinary academic department comprised of three divisions – Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics with 57 primary faculty. In addition to serving as Informatics Division Director, the successful candidate will also serve as a member of the Executive Leadership Team for the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics, and there may be additional leadership opportunities in the Penn Institute for Biomedical Informatics (IBI); these opportunities can be discussed with the IBI Director during the recruitment process.

The successful candidate is expected to be a visionary leader, dedicated to faculty career development, a strong advocate for methodological, collaborative, and team-oriented research, and committed to training the next generation of researchers in biomedical and health data sciences. They should also demonstrate a willingness to work with other leaders as part of a larger leadership team, and be interested in working in the rich team-science-oriented environment at the Perelman School of Medicine at University of Pennsylvania and building connections with numerous current partners including Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn Medicine Health System, Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, and the various research centers and institutes at the University of Pennsylvania.
