Data Scientist / Computational Biologist

The candidate will be part of the Computational Systems Biology group at the University of Salzburg. We develop innovative and interpretable machine learning models based on prior biological knowledge to explain variation in big biological data.

Applicants are highly encouraged to bring in and develop their own ideas. Our recent ideas revolve around developing computational models to evaluate existing biological knowledge (networks, gene sets, …) against large biological datasets. Especially single-cell transcriptomics and spatial datasets are rapidly growing in scale, and it becomes increasingly important to assess the congruence of biological knowledge with these large datasets in a scalable (automated and quantitative) manner.
Projects and tasks:
- Development of methods combining network biology, statistics, and machine learning
- Integrative bioinformatic analyses of multi-omics and single-cell data sets
- Development of databases and software packages
- Teaching and student co-supervision
- Publications and contributions to grants
The city of Salzburg has ample natural and cultural attractions as well as fast connections to Vienna and Munich. Our university has 18 000 students, and a highly collaborative research environment in both biomedical and computational sciences.
The position is initially limited to 3 years, extensions are possible.

We are looking for candidates with:
- Relevant doctoral degree (bioinformatics, computational biology, or related disciplines)
- Publication experience in computational biology
- Experience with machine learning, statistics, and other quantitative sciences
- Extensive knowledge of the programming languages R and/or Python
- Good understanding of key biological concepts
- Ideally experience with multi-omics and/or single-cell data
- Excellent English skills, German is expected within a reasonable time frame
