SEARCH EXTENDED This position performs computational biology specializing in high-throughput next-generation sequencing and micro-array analysis as part of a bioinformatics core facility. This position will interact with UIC medical and biological researchers to analyze data coming from various platforms.

Job Responsibilities

• Maintain and operate commercial and open-source bioinformatics software tools for RRC’s Research Informatics Core (RIC).
• Construct pipelines and workflows for sequence analysis and build custom algorithms and tools for specific problems.
• Work closely with the core laboratories and experimental biologists in analyzing data.
• Consult with other scientists on study design, identifying elements from their data and suggest alternative approaches.
• Provide support and maintenance for existing applications; participate in production support, installation, testing and setup.
• Develop new software methodologies and computational tools as needed by research projects.
• Train students, post-docs and faculty in the use of software tools.
• Translate high-level specifications into business cases, object models and ultimately into designs and implementation.
• Generate reports and briefs of sequencing analysis and experiments for the RRCs RIC.
• Publish peer-reviewed scientific articles, and work with faculty and the Core Director to write federal grant proposals.
• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Bachelor's degree in a biological sciences or related field required. Master's degree in biological sciences, informatics or a related field preferred.

2 years specific experience in DNA sequencing/microarray informatics.

Experience with the Linux &/ or Unix computing environments required and previous experience implementing processes in a high-performance computing cluster desired.

Proficiency in Python, Perl, R, Bash, or other programming or scripting language required.

Experience in handling of diverse bioinformatics needs of scientists, and demonstrated understanding of sequence analysis methods required, include methods for:
Transcriptomics (RNA-seq, miRNA-seq, single-cell RNA-seq)
Genomics (variant calling, genome assemblies)
Epigenomics (ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, bisulfite-size)
Metagenomics (amplicon or shotgun approaches).

Experience in statistical analysis, machine learning, and data visualization as applied to the biological sciences.

Experience in systems biology and network analysis.

Ability to communicate effectively with bioinformatics peers and non-technical scientific collaborators.

Experience with instructing scientists on the use of computational biology tools and analyses.

Knowledge of commercial, and publicly available bioinformatics tools and data sets. Successfully demonstrated communication, writing and organization skills.
