PROFILE of the DEPARTMENT/COLLEGE

Nevada Institute of Personalized Medicine (NIPM) is the only established NIH-endorsed Center of Excellence in Nevada. The mission of NIPM is to improve individual and community health in Nevada and to accelerate the adoption of advanced genomics for the entire state healthcare systems. NIPM will accomplish this through research and technology commercialization, community outreach, independent clinical research and genetic testing, and education and training for expanded Nevada job creation.

Qualifications

ROLE of the POSITION

A postdoctoral position is available immediately in Dr. Qian Liu's lab (qgenlab.org) in NIPM, University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Dr. Liu's lab focuses on the development of cutting-edge deep learning methods in human diseases (such as schizophrenia and lupus) for the study of genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics and epi-transcriptomics. A postdoctoral scholar in Dr. Liu's lab will work on the method implementation and biomarker detection for the NIH COBRE project (Identification of novel methylation biomarkers in schizophrenia).

The successful candidate will
• Design novel computational approaches for third-generation sequencing data analysis
• Develop state-of-the-art computational platforms for biomarker detection in schizophrenia
• Deliver computational tools with well-crafted and maintainable code
• Communicate findings through presentations, abstracts and publications on a regular basis
• Participate in project planning and evaluation of data
• Work with graduate and undergraduate students in the lab
• Receive training for an independent career

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a Ph.D. from a regionally accredited college or university in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Biostatitics, or related fields. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment. Other requirements include
> Strong hands-on skills with one of programing language (e.g. Python, C/C++, Java, etc)
> Proficiency in communicating ideas and presenting complicated analyses
> Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with others
> Willing to learn machine learning/deep learning algorithms.
> Passion for proposing/implementing computational algorithms with genomics/transcriptomics data.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
> Expertise with the development of deep learning approaches (e.g. Tensorflow, PyTorch) is a strong plus
> Experience with DNA and RNA sequencing analysis especially Nanopore sequencing is a strong plus
> Bash/shell scripting and proficiency with Linux operating systems is a plus
> Proficiency with handling large-scale genomic data in a Linux is a plus
