This position is funded by Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF – EPCDRI) for improving early-detection and diagnosis of liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, HCC). The position duration is 12 months and is extendible subject to the satisfactory performance. The objective of this role includes, but not limited to, developing advance artificial intelligence (AI) and bioinformatics methods to individual clinical metadata, and extensive microbiome-based dataset to identify and validate HCC-specific microbial-derived metabolic/cytokine biomarker models for the early diagnosis of HCC.


Qualifications

PhD or equivalent qualification in computer science or computational biology.
Deep understanding and previous research experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Previous experience in bioinformatics and analysis of omics data (particularly metagenomics data) in medical and/or biological (not essential, but highly favoured).
Familiarity with common statistical programming languages (Python/R/MATLAB) and open-source ML/AI frameworks (PyTorch/TensorFlow), as well as bash scripting on HPC systems.
Proficiency in at least one of the programming languages listed above with former experience of project implementation.
Excellent organisational and time management skills with capacity to deliver high quality project outcomes to deadline.
Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision.
Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
Highly developed verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by first-author publications and/or other demonstrations.
Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
