Bioinformatics Core Facility Manager

Description

The Faculty of Sciences, in collaboration with Medical and Life Sciences Faculties, is seeking to fill a full-time (100%) vacancy in the UAntwerpen Department of Computer Science for a Bioinformatics Core Facility Manager.

Biomina (biomedical informatics network Antwerpen) is a new Core Facility that delivers professional bioinformatics services to support biomedical, clinical, biological, and bio-engineering labs of the UAntwerpen and external clients in hospitals and industry. The mission is to 1) build sustainable support, training, and collaboration models; 2) increase bioinformatics capacity to meet growing demands; and 3) build a strong bioinformatics community. The Bioinformatics Core Facility Manager will be the daily lead of this facility, which is built around a multi-disciplinary UAntwerpen consortium that unites life scientists and data scientists in bioinformatics and medical informatics. We will embed the selected candidate in the Adrem Data Lab (Department of Computer Science). He/she will interact closely with partners from the Medical, Life Sciences, and Sciences faculties.

Job description

Together with the local bioinformatics community, you manage and run a bioinformatics core facility serving academic life science researchers and external clients, integrating expertise available in the local bioinformatics community.
You lead the standardization and integration of local bioinformatics platforms, pipelines and infrastructure for (epi-)genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics.
You coordinate bioinformatics training, seminars, and networking events for UAntwerpen researchers, and you manage the local bioinformatics PR channels.
You support the maintenance and usage of bioinformatics hardware and software.
You manage collaborations and contribute to the bioinformatics component in life science research projects.
You maintain and expand national and international collaborations with bioinformatics (research) networks.

Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for a principal research fellow in the Contract Research Staff category (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).

Qualifications

You have a master’s degree in bioinformatics, life sciences, computer sciences, or a related field.
You can demonstrate at least four years of hands-on experience in bioinformatics, medical informatics, or biomedical data mining. A doctoral degree, work in industry or other relevant experience are a plus.
You are experienced in data processing pipelines for at least one type of omics data. Familiarity with machine learning, pattern discovery and AI techniques is a plus. Familiarity with scientific workflow languages (e.g. Nextflow or snakemake) is a bonus.
You have strong statistical, computational, and programming skills (preferably in Python and R).
You have a collaborative, service-oriented attitude. Proven experience in supporting life scientists with bioinformatics expertise is a plus. Management and business-related skills are a bonus.

You are quality-minded, conscientious, creative, and cooperative.
You are a team player who can build bridges between disciplines, and you have solid interdisciplinary communication skills.
You are fluent in academic English (speaking and writing).
