Description

Associate Research Scientist/Research Scientist

The Herbert and Florence Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics of Columbia University (IICD, cancerdynamics.columbia.edu) invites applications for Associate Research Scientist or Research Scientist positions in quantitative aspects of cancer research.
The IICD is an interdisciplinary institute located on the Morningside Heights campus of Columbia University, focused on the interplay between mathematical sciences and cancer research. We collaborate across disciplinary boundaries to develop aspects of science and engineering that can improve our understanding of cancer biology, origins, treatment and prevention.
The IICD invites applications from researchers who have strong research expertise in AI, machine learning and related statistical methods, and their application to any aspect of cancer research, including, but not limited to, early detection, cancer immunology, single cell technologies, and imaging.

To this end, we expect successful candidates to:
- Conduct independent, cutting-edge research in cancer data science (75% effort)
- Support the mission of the Institute on developing the interplay between mathematical sciences and cancer research, through contributions to outreach and training (15% effort)
- Identify and attract external funding to support their research program (10% effort)

The IICD offers a competitive salary and an inclusive, interdisciplinary environment that promotes professional and personal development of the Institute’s members. All research scientists may benefit from additional training opportunities available at the Morningside campus and the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. IICD also provides administrative support for grant submissions and development of collaborative research.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD in a quantitative discipline such as statistics or computer science, or in medicine, biology or another STEM discipline with a strong quantitative component. STEM graduates who wish to complete their transition towards computational biology are strongly encouraged to apply for the Associate Research Scientist position. Candidates for Associate Research Scientist are strongly encouraged, but not required to have postdoctoral experience. Candidates for Research Scientist should have made substantial contributions in their field and have experience in collaborative research and in training students, postdocs or researchers.

Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in a quantitative discipline such as statistics or computer science, or in medicine, biology or another STEM discipline with a strong quantitative component
- Strong analytical, computational, and quantitative skills
- A record of outstanding research, commensurate with years of professional experience, as evidenced by
publications, grants, software outputs, and other measures of impact.

Additional Information
Candidates for professional officer of research positions are expected to have established their ability to conduct original, independent scientific research. To hold the rank of research scientist, a candidate’s qualifications and contributions to their fields of research must be equivalent to those of an associate professor; for the rank of associate research scientist, to those of an assistant professor. All candidates for Professional Officer of Research positions are expected to be able to work well in teams and to communicate effectively the results of their research or research activities both orally and in writing.
