Within the University, the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) is a highly interdisciplinary research centre (IC), integrating experimental biology and computational biology approaches in order to develop the foundation of a future predictive, preventive and personalized medicine.

As a pioneer in its field, the LCSB develops many research and research-supporting applications in-house. We are looking for an experienced postdoc to work with central as well as federated data management solutions, implementation of bioinformatic/medical informatics analysis algorithms, and GUI design for a recently funded Innovative Medicine Initiative (IMI) project – ‘European Platform for Neurodegenerative Diseases (EPND)’. The overall objective of this project is to develop EPND as a European infrastructure facilitating access to biological samples and data in order to accelerate biomarker discovery and validation, and eventually support the development of therapeutics for Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and other neurodegenerative diseases. Establish a network that provides central and federated access to high quality samples and data from many existing cohorts by combining existing data discovery and sharing initiatives made interoperable as part of the AD Workbench. In addition to enabling the sharing and access of data and samples, the platform will provide central and federated capabilities to ensure unified interpretation of biomarker data.

Your Role:

Deploy EPND data and analysis platform and manage the sample metadata and data in central as well as federated environment.
Setting up of an electronic data capture system to collect the clinical data
Pre-clinical, clinical, molecular and imaging data management, harmonization, integration and analysis.
Provide support for sample and data discovery and access.
Work closely with other team members (postdocs, developers and data scientists) on the design and implementation of statistical, ML/AI based data analysis workflows and visualization tools.
Retrieval and analysis of project specific data from public repositories and literature.
Bring new IT/bio-medical-informatics data analysis workflows and pipelines to the community.

What we expect from you:

A PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics or related fields, with an interest in biomedical informatics and translational medicine.
Strong computer programming in Python, and/or R is required, additionally good knowledge of Shell, Linux platform, and JavaScript is an advantage.
Skills and working knowledge of RDBMS (PostgreSQL) is required, additionally experience of NoSQL and graph database technologies is an advantage.
Strong understanding and competency with APIs and data standards and representations such as JSON, DCAT.
Experience of source code control process using tools such as Git.
Understanding of microservice architectures & containerisation (Docker), and container orchestration technologies (Kubernetes) to facilitate federated analysis is an advantage.
Prior experience of building and operating a SaaS/PaaS platform in a public cloud environment (Azure, AWS etc.) is considered as an advantage.
Understanding of information security and best practices.
Good knowledge of statistical methods, ML/AI analysis of clinical data and its interpretation is an advantage.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate clearly the scientific and technical needs and to work within an interdisciplinary setting, communicating with other internal/external partners.
Prior experience dealing with pre-clinical, clinical, molecular and imaging data integration, and knowledge of neurogenerative diseases is considered as an advantage.
