The Center for Public Health Genomics at the University of Virginia is seeking a Research Scientist to perform research at the cutting edge of human genetics and genomics research.

Duties & Responsibilities: The successful candidate will join a collegial and productive research team focused on the statistical analysis of human genetic studies. Analytical responsibilities will include analysis of genomic and proteomic data, quantitative trait locus mapping of protein bioarmerksr, and integrative genetic analysis of common and rare disease variants. Collaborative efforts will include an emphasis on post-GWAS studies including whole genome sequence analysis, targeted analysis of candidate genes, and integrative analysis of genomic and transcriptomic data in studies of cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes and pulmonary diseases.


Qualifications

The Research Scientisit position requires a doctoral degree or master's degree with significant experience in Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Genetics, Epidemiology, or a related field; knowledge of statistics and genetics; experience with statistical software (R, Splus or Matlab); a strong work ethic; the ability to work independently combined with willingness to work in a highly interactive and collegial group; and excellent written and oral communication skills. Desired qualifications include experience working with large-scale multi-center studies; working knowledge of existing tools for genetic analysis and data management; Python or Perl programming skills; Unix shell scripting and experience working in a Unix / Linux environment. Research Scientists are expected to perform assigned tasks independently. In addition to a firm background in the particular field, Research Scientists should demonstrate the ability to lead small groups and work without additional supervision once objectives are defined and methods of approach are set.
