Summary

The Bioinformatics Staff Scientist Sr performs advanced analysis for research projects with minimal guidance from scientific management and faculty. Independently leads the initial consultation and input for the planning of experimental design and analysis. Works collaboratively and independently with investigators or scientific staff for analysis and interpretation of data including detailed reports, quality control, data visualization and assistance with manuscript preparation and grant submissions. Provides development and integration of analysis pipelines including integration with other shared resources technology platforms. Utilizes open-source tools and develops novel tools and visualization approaches for data analysis and interpretation. Serves as a resource for investigators and staff regarding bioinformatic approaches and tools.

An overview of the role:

Independently manages the daily workflow of multiple competing bioinformatics projects including estimating timelines, validating data quality, providing data analysis and data reports and visualizations to investigators

Responsible for communicating project progress, timely submission of data and related reports including providing support for manuscript submission and grant applications as well as data submission to public resource repositories.

Writes own code, finds errors, corrects and validates output and results. Performs complex programming for parsing, data transposition and data merging. Provides input to junior staff members.

Collaborates with researchers and members of other core facilities to interpret bioinformatic analysis obtained for biological or clinical experiments.

The Ideal candidate demonstrates:

Experience in bioinformatics support using public and commercial software packages.

Collaboration with biologists and biostatisticians to develop and apply novel bioinformatics approaches with Python, R, RMarkdown, Bioconductor, C, C++, PERL, HTML, JAVA, XML, MATLAB, etc.

Experience in microbiome 16s rRNA and shotgun metagenomics sequencing analysis, multi-omics analysis by integration of metagenomics data with transcription and proteomics data

Experience in mass spectrometry-base proteomics and metabolomics data analysis

Familiarity with Linux/high performance computing cluster environment .

Familiarity with Git and Github for version control, and SQL database tools.

Ability to collaborate on projects and engage investigators, scientific staff and biostatisticians, and establish and maintain effective collaborative research relationships with others and to contribute to ongoing research projects requiring bioinformatics support and communicate clearly verbally and in writing.


Qualifications

A Masters degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Math, Physics or Computational Biology AND 10 years of related experience,

Or

A PhD in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Math, Physics or Computational Biology AND 6 years of related experience
