Senior Biomedical Research Scientist, Trans-Divisional Research Program
The NCI Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) is recruiting an accomplished Senior Biomedical Research Scientist in the Trans-Divisional Research Program (TDRP), DCEG. DCEG’s epidemiologists, geneticists, and biostatisticians discover the causes of cancer and inform the means for prevention by conducting transdisciplinary epidemiological and genetic research. The Division’s research has an impact on public health policy in the United States and around the world.
The Senior Biomedical Research Scientist will serve in the role of senior bioinformatician and will work closely with the Senior Advisor for Genomic Studies and other principal investigators to understand the scientific needs and provide overall direction and support for bioinformatics in the Division. The senior bioinformatician will play a key role in identifying and evaluating new methods and technologies in bioinformatics, and will be responsible for creating and maintaining a collaborative network across bioinformaticians in the Division, NCI, and NIH to facilitate communication, exchange of expertise, and training. The senior bioinformatician will conduct and lead research in collaboration with other DCEG scientists.
The senior bioinformatician will also serve as the head for a newly established DCEG Bioinformatics Virtual Core. The main mission of this Core will be to create a collaborative network across bioinformaticians working in DCEG, the Cancer Genomics Research Laboratory (a DCEG designated Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research), and other contracting mechanisms, to facilitate communication, exchange of expertise, training, and professional development. The head of the Core will identify and evaluate new methods and technologies, provide training/exposure to Cloud computing, as well as help/support best practices following FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. The head of the Virtual Core will report to the TDRP Program Director, and the DCEG Senior Advisor for Genomic Epidemiology will provide scientific oversight of the Core.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree in bioinformatics, biometry, computational biology or a related field and have substantial relevant experience providing management and support for bioinformatics within complex epidemiologic and genetic studies. The candidate must also be recognized as an international expert in bioinformatics; demonstrate strong skills in and innovative approaches to bioinformatics using both cluster computing and cloud technology, and in-depth knowledge of relevant technologies; and have published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific or medical journals and presented at scientific meetings.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Senior Biomedical Research Scientist is a full-time equivalent employment position.
