About the role:
At Basecamp Research, we are gathering data on millions of previously undiscovered proteins from biodiverse regions around the world. We are hiring a Protein Bioinformatician to level up our in silico characterisation of these novel proteins, with a constant focus on delivering value to our commercial partners across the bioeconomy
Responsibilities:
-Identify useful models and annotation tools from the literature to implement internally and benchmark against existing methods.
-Curate internal data to develop datasets for machine learning that leverage the large diversity of our sequences to go beyond what is possible with public databases.
-Directly and frequently engage with commercial partners to understand their current requirements and deliver valuable products to be deployed in their own internal processes.
-Work in close collaboration with the data science and commercial teams to develop analyses that address business needs.
-Interpret & visualise findings; communicate insights to the wider team.
-Good maintenance of databases, records, and code.
What we can offer you in return:
-The opportunity to be a key early member in our team at the intersection of biotechnology and data science.
-Ownership of fast-moving, ambitious projects with real-world impact.
-A fun, flexible and supportive work environment in the centre of London with an emphasis on team performance and personal development.
-Cycle to work scheme
-Company Lunches
-A competitive salary & generous stock option plan.
-Exploring the world’s untapped biodiversity...
The ideal candidate will have:
-Graduate Degree (PhD/MSc) in a relevant field (Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Life Sciences with computational focus or similar) or equivalent commercial experience.
-Relevant industry experience is preferred but not essential.
-Experience in a programming language (R / Python) and in the use of command line tools in a *nix environment.
-A strong track record in sequence-based protein function prediction and familiarity with the diverse public databases for functional, structural and taxonomic annotation of protein sequences.
-A can-do attitude & team spirit.
-Familiarity with working in a collaborative coding environment.
-Excellent communication skills.
-Enthusiasm about the potential of biology and data science to provide innovative solutions to our planet’s challenges.
