Health Data Science is a strategic profiling area of Tampere University that brings together domain experts on data science and health research across Faculties. Health Data Science involves advanced analytics of biological, clinical, and health care data. Our areas of interest range from in-depth biological disease characterization at genome and phenotype level to population-scale health care analysis with national registers and real-world data, e.g. from hospital data lakes. We aim to develop and validate biomarkers and predictive models for prevention, screening and treatment of diseases, as well as develop approaches to stratification and treatment selection to optimize outcomes and health care effectiveness.

We conduct basic and applied research including methodological, clinical and public health spheres in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAUH). Thus, the environment is strongly built to support translational research. Strong existing substance areas in health research include cancer, cardiovascular and celiac disease, diabetes, immunology and medical technology.

We are seeking highly motivated applicants who aim to develop internationally competitive research careers in data science and its applications in health research.

We offer at least three two-year post-doctoral positions (starting date September 1st, 2021 or as mutually agreed) to expand our expertise in health data science. We are interested to hire applicants with strong methods skills in data sciences and with interest in developing and applying state-of-the-art analysis methods to health-related research programs. We also welcome applications that propose new openings in health data science that are complementary to the advertised topics.

We expect the candidates to pursue scientific research at the highest level and to contribute to development of health data science expertise at the University. Active collaboration with local, national and global research partners, as well as with clinical stakeholders and industry is encouraged. You can also participate in education in health data science in line with your own expertise.

Tampere University is a multidisciplinary environment for research and education. We have a strong research community in data sciences (e.g. machine learning, signal processing, bioinformatics, bioimaging, in-silico modeling, biostatistics) as well as on health research (genomics, epidemiology, clinical research). Tampere University harbors state of the art computing and data storage as well as molecular research infrastructure. Research environment provides access to health registries and real-world data e.g. from hospital data lakes.

The appointment will be for two years with a starting date September 1st, 2021 or as mutually agreed. Your position will be located within one of the research groups participating in health data science based on mutual research interest. The research group will provide access to infrastructure and data, supervision and peer support to succeed in research. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries are based on a combination of job requirements and employees’ personal performance, in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for a recently graduated post-doctoral researcher is approximately 3500 - 3800 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.


Qualifications

You should have a doctoral degree (e.g. mathematics, statistics, or computational sciences) in an area relevant for pursuing post doctoral research in data science applicable in health research. Late-stage PhD students are also welcome to apply. Fluency in English is required.
