Description

Two tenure-track positions in health data science

Health Data Science is a strategic profiling area of Tampere University that brings together domain experts on data science and health research across Faculties. Health Data Science involves advanced analytics of biological, clinical, and health care data. Our areas of interest range from in depth biological disease characterization at genome and phenotype level to population scale health care analysis with national registers and real-world data e.g. from hospital data lakes. We aim to develop and validate biomarkers and predictive models for prevention, screening and treatment, as well as develop approaches to stratification and treatment selection to optimize outcomes and health care effectiveness.

Positions will be located at Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology (MET) and Faculty of Social Sciences (SOC) based on research focus of the applicants. MET is dedicated to pursuing world-class research and delivering high-quality education in the fields of biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine and health technology. SOC focuses on society, health and welfare and one position is located with Unit of Health Sciences, involving biostatistics, epidemiology, health services research and other fields.

We conduct basic, applied, as well as clinical research in collaboration with Tampere University Hospital (TAYS). Thus, the environment is strongly built to conduct translational research. Strong existing research areas in health research include applications in cancer, cardiovascular and celiac disease, diabetes, immunology and medical technology.

Job description

We are seeking highly motivated applicants with a track-record of internationally competitive research in data science and its applications in health research. Two tenure track position(s) are available:

Position 1: We are interested in hiring an Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of biomedical data analysis on large scale datasets, but welcome applications in all areas of medical and health data analysis. We take a broad view of medical and health data, including but not limited to sequencing, biomedical imaging, phenotype analysis, and applications of these. We encourage candidates with interest in developing computational solutions to improve healthcare to apply.

Position 2: We are interested in hiring an Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of healthcare data analysis. We especially encourage applications from candidates with experience in development and applications of novel analysis methods for population-level studies of health care outcomes using registers and data lakes. We take a broad view of healthcare data analysis, including but not limited to development of computational solutions for (patient) stratification and treatment selection to optimize outcomes and health care effectiveness.

In both positions you will be expected to pursue and supervise scientific research in your topic area at the highest level. Active collaboration with local, national and global research partners, as well as with clinical stakeholders and industry is encouraged. You will be expected to secure substantial external funding for your research program as well as nurture interactions with the wider society. You can also contribute to development of degree education in health data science in line with your own expertise.

Tampere University is a multidisciplinary environment for research and education. We have strong research community in data sciences (e.g. machine learning, signal processing, bioinformatics, bioimaging, in-silico modeling, biostatistics) as well as on health research (genomics, epidemiology, clinical research). Tampere University harbors state of the art computing and data storage as well as molecular research infrastructure. Research environment provides access to health registries and real-world data e.g. from data lakes.

The initial appointment will be for five years, with renewal and eventual permanent tenure subject to successful performance evaluation. You will enjoy a generous startup package, subject to negotiation, and receive support throughout the five-year period to facilitate the establishment of an internationally competitive research program. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries are based on a combination of job requirements and employees’ personal performance, in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. A typical starting salary for an Assistant Professor is approximately 4100 - 4500 EUR/month and for an Associate Professor approximately 4700 - 5500 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed dependent upon experience and/or performance.
