POSITION SUMMARY:

A Bioinformatics Research Assistant position is available in Dr. Jin Zhang’s lab (sites.wustl.edu/jinzhang/) to work on computational biology and bioinformatics research. The candidate will play a critical role in carrying out computational data analyses using genomic and clinical data and documenting experimental results.

The position offers an excellent opportunity to conduct research in a supportive and stimulating environment, closely collaborating with computer scientists, biologists, and clinicians within the Department and with other Institutes across the campus, including Department of Computer Science, McDonnell Genome Institute, and Institute for Informatics (I2).

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Conducts bioinformatics analyses using omics-based data sets and clinical features.
-Assists in data storage, investigation, and dissemination of large data sets.
-Works with research team to develop new algorithms to support genomics data analyses.
-Coordinates research projects to effectively visualize data and convey findings to scientists, clinicians, and community members.
-Helps maintain, support, and document tools, code, and data sets, and assists with reporting of methods, data, and results.


Qualifications

-Bachelor’s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics or a related field; or combined education and experience of five years.
-Experience or course work completed in a statistical programming language, such as R.
-Familiarity with Linux/Unix environment.
-Highly motivated with excellent oral and written communication skills.
-Background in biology and good understanding of computational biology.
-Understanding of next-generation sequencing technologies and expertise in standard bioinformatics tools.
-Understanding of statistical techniques for differential expression, survival, clustering, and gene set enrichment analysis.
-Experience or course work completed in object-oriented algorithm design and implementation with Python, C++, and/or Java.
-Experience with Git, Docker, Common Workflow Language, and Cloud computing.
