We are looking for a computational biology/genomics intern to join our global Data and Computational Sciences (DCS) team at Vertex. By leading efforts in analysis of large-scale omics data and in computational drug design, DCS helps prioritize target diseases, expand our understanding of diseases, and transform drug discovery. The summer intern will support pre-clinical research activities for a clinical stage small molecule program. As a key member of the team, they will 1) conduct the analysis and visualization of bulk RNA-sequencing data to characterize our experimental models and their responses to candidate molecules using existing internal workflows, and 2) streamline the analysis pipeline. The intern will collaborate with laboratory scientists and have ample opportunities to interact with other members of DCS.
Key responsibilities:
• Review primary literature and develop an analysis plan for the dataset of interest
• Analyze, visualize, and interpret large-scale, bulk RNA-sequencing data
• Develop and streamline analysis pipeline
• Present results to the project team and help them design potential follow-up experiments
Requirements:
• Currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree in computational biology, genomics, bioinformatics, human genetics, or a related field in the biological data sciences
• Experience with analysis, visualization, and interpretation of next-generation sequencing (NGS) data
• Demonstrated ability to write software in at least one scripting language (R, Python) and familiarity with Linux/Unix systems
• Experienced with high-performance computing environment
• Solid understanding of statistics
• Comfort and successful track record presenting data analysis results to audiences of various technical expertise
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with project teams
Preferred Qualifications:
• PhD candidates (post qualifying exam) highly preferred
