Staff Scientist Position
Epidemiology and Community Health Branch

The Epidemiology and Community Health Branch (ECHB), National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), is recruiting a computational analyst/bioinformatician for the analysis of large-scale association studies.

The work within the ECHB integrates large scale data sources (epidemiologic, electronic health records, environmental, molecular and genetic) to understand the occurrence, etiology and outcomes of HLBS disorders. Specifically, electronic health record (EHR) data, which is intended for clinical care rather research analytics is complex, often unstructured and contains missing values. Its use requires a robust expertise in data operations, data visualization, statistics, and machine learning methods, as well as an understanding of ethical and legal frameworks guiding data privacy and security.

As a Staff Scientist within the ECHB, the successful candidate will be responsible for data procurement, bioinformatics and statistical analytical support for multiple projects, including the following activities:

• Performs programming and statistical analyses on data related to all domains of research on the epidemiology of HLBS diseases including diagnosis, treatment, prevention and outcomes
• Manage and/or lead timely delivery of statistical analyses and reporting per timelines and study specifications. Organize results into clear presentations and concise summaries of work.
• Provide statistical/informatics support and mentorship to ECHB investigators; consult with investigators on design and analysis, including guidance on appropriate methods for processing and analyzing data; create analysis data sets for projects.
• Implement and maintain cutting edge analytical approaches including machine learning and bioinformatics pipelines for conducting cutting edge analyses
• Identify and maintain methods to access, link and analyze EHR data
• Process and utilize publicly available datasets and data from NHLBI and NIH epidemiological cohorts
• Grow the ECHB experience with novel data sources and cutting edge bioinformatics and statistical methods.
• Define and implement quality control standard operating procedures, including detection of data anomalies, feedback to project and data management teams, ensure that system and program documentation for assigned projects is complete and accurate.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree in bioinformatics, biostatistics, or other related disciplines. The candidate must have robust experience processing and analyzing large scale datasets (including health care data) and with inferential statistics and machine learning methods. Critical expertise includes algorithmic implementation, statistical programming and data manipulation and proficiency in programming using programs for data analyses such as SAS and R. A demonstrated ability to self-educate in current and evolving bioinformatics techniques and resources is important.

The ability to support collaborations outside the ECHB and strong communication skills to interact with people from diverse areas and disciplines is critically important as are excellent written and oral (English) communication skills. A track record of publications in peer-reviewed literature as part of a research team or collaborative projects is important.
