We are seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist to join our team to support the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI’s) Cancer Data Aggregator activities at Rockville, MD. As a Bioinformatics Scientist you will be performing highly impactful dataset identification, manipulation, indexing, loading, and API testing to allow cancer researchers to effectively find an amazing breadth of data types (genomic, proteomic, clinical, imaging, …) on the Google and Amazon Clouds for their cancer research. You will be trusted to be an integral component of a prestigious multi-institute team of researchers that are an integral part of many large cross institute teams defining and driving how the NCI and the NIH funded researchers worldwide find and utilize cancer data on commercial clouds. As part of this six-person team, you will be supporting NCI's mission to lead, conduct, and support cancer research across the nation and world to advance scientific knowledge and help all people live longer, healthier lives.

This role supports a critical mission for the public health, working for the prestigious NCI in Bethesda MD. Your scientific acumen and bioinformatics hands-on knowledge of how data and tools are used and find relevant biomedical and molecular data, and utilize it on the commercial clouds of Google and AWS, will provide the unique insights that positively impact the success of the project. IN THIS ROLE, A TYPICAL DAY WILL INCLUDE:
• Programmatically explore datasets and annotations available at NCI Based Data stores
• Personally interact with data repositories to understand nuances of their data indexing and improve how data is received and utilized
• Establish professional relationships with a broad spectrum of respected scientific teams
• Analyze, understand, organize, and programmatically transform indexed dataset descriptions for loading into a production cloud-based indexing system
• Develop productized processes and workflows that allow newly released data to be indexed quickly and robustly.
• Validate that APIs querying and returning information about the indexed data behave appropriately and troubleshoot problems with interfaces
• Describe and document how the resource is used, and support cancer researchers in their use of the programmatic search APIs to find cancer data

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• BS or equivalent and five years’ experience or a MS and three years’ experience
• Experience in programmatically utilizing and manipulating multiple types of omics biomedical datasets
• Proficiency in at least two of the following: Python, UNIX/LINUX, SQL, bash scripting, and R programming
• Prior experience interacting with bioinformaticians and computational biologists through documentation and tutorials
• Ability to obtain a NIH Public Trust

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Masters or Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, or related field
• Experience with cloud development ecosystems – Google and / or AWS.
• Productizing research software into a robust maintainable process.
• Fluency with tools and methods for -omics data analysis (bwa, GATK, Picard, samtools, vcftools, RVTESTS, beagle, GenomicRanges, tools for RNAseq analysis, etc.)
• Cancer research experience
