Description

We are seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist to join our team to support the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Genomics Cloud Resource activities at Rockville, MD. As a Bioinformatics Scientist you will be performing highly impactful dataset identification, loading, and curation; tool discovery, qualification, and provisioning; and educating scientists through collaborations on how to use the Google Cloud for their Cancer Research.

You will be an integral component of the ISB-CGC Cancer Genomics Cloud Resource (ISB-CGC.org) responsible for delivering well curated data and tools to the Google Cloud Platform to democratize the use of NCI’s cancer datasets and expedite the diagnose and treatment of cancer. You will be part of a 12-person team supporting NCI's mission to lead, conduct, and support cancer research across the nation to advance scientific knowledge and help all people live longer, healthier lives.

Your scientific acumen and bioinformatics hands-on knowledge of how data and tools can be used in the commercial Google cloud to rapidly move cancer research forward, helping people nationally and worldwide utilize the amazing tools now available to be applied to the ever-growing detailed and complex molecular and clinical datasets. In this role, a typical day will include:

● Develop -omics and clinical pipelines/workflows and/or Jupyter notebooks based on rapidly developing technologies to allow ISB-CGC end users to optimize the use of NCI -omics and clinical data in the Google Cloud Platform

● Write examples, tutorials, and create videos for the ISB-CGC documentation that demonstrates to end-users how to best use bioinformatics tools/pipelines on the Google Cloud as well as for tutorials on our ISB-CGC web-applications

● Help with expanding available public datasets and assist with the improvement of querying capabilities across multiple datasets

● Aid researchers wanting to customize their own analysis to answer specific research questions

● Learn/ keep up-to-date with GA4GH and other worldwide -omics and personalized medicine initiatives


Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

● BS and five years hands on experience
● Experience with implementing bioinformatics pipelines/workflows, Jupyter notebooks and R scripts in a research environment
● Proficiency in several of the following: UNIX/LINUX, SQL, bash scripting, R and Python programming
● Prior experience interacting with bioinformaticians and computational biologists through documentation and tutorials
● Ability to teach Cancer Researchers how to use ISB-CGC systems through in-person training at conferences or other forums
● Ability to obtain a NIH Public Trust

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

● Masters or Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, or related field
● Experience with cloud development ecosystems – Google and / or AWS
● Creating and using container technologies, such as Docker or Singularity
● Implementing parallel computation for bioinformatics pipelines
● Demonstrated fluency with tools and methods for -omics data analysis (bwa, GATK, Picard, samtools, vcftools, RVTESTS, beagle, GenomicRanges, tools for RNAseq analysis, etc.)
● Cancer research experience
