A PhD and a MSc candidate positions are available in Dr. Pingzhao Hu's lab at the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics (BMG), Department of Computer Science and Department of Electrical Computer Engineering in the University of Manitoba, Canada. We develop and apply statistical and computational algorithms for analyzing big genetic and genomic data. The successful candidates will develop deep learning and advanced statistical algorithms to analyze medical images, single cell sequencing data, compound structures and chemogenomic data sets.
Depending on the candidate’s background, he/she can register the PhD/MSc program in either the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Department of Computer Science.
The successful candidate should have a thesis-based Master’s or BSc degree in broadly defined life science, computer science, computer engineering, mathematics or statistics. The successful candidate should have a GPA >3.5 of 4.5 (average >=85% in the last 60 credits).
The candidate should have solid programming skills (R, Python and/or C, etc.), quantitative analysis background (machine learning, data mining, etc.) and acquaintance with Linux.
The candidate should also meet one of the following English test requirement: University of Michigan English Language Examination Assessment Battery MELAB (80%); Test of English as a Foreign Language TOEFL– Internet Based iBT (86); International English Language Testing System IELTS (6.5).
