Research Associate- Bioinformatics Analyst

Description

The Bioinformatics Analyst manages and organizes large databases, uses software and other command line tools to gather, store, manipulate and statistically analyze research data for genomic and proteomic research. The Bioinformatics Analyst will work with and support a multi-disciplinary team of researchers, investigators and scientists by delivering bioinformatics services for biomedical data on diverse research projects including but not limited to genomic analyses of structural variations, epigenetics, gene expression, microRNA expression. The Bioinformatics analyst will be well-versed with combining experimental and bioinformatic approaches to advance the knowledge base in human disease, specifically cancer

Major Accountabilities
1. Work with standard bioinformatics tools and visualization packages
2. Automate and refine the processing and analysis of large data sets
3. Develop and use bioinformatics pipelines to prepare and analyze data
4. Design, develop, and maintain databases for scientific and commercial applications
5. Analyze and work with NGS data, ideally Whole genome-Seq, miRNA-Seq, RNA-Seq, and Exome-Seq
6. Work with standard tools for biostatistical data analysis
7. Develop and conduct basic bioinformatics training programs for research institute staff education.


Qualifications

-MS in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or Biological sciences and additional three to four years of academic or industry experience
-Knowledge of molecular and genome biology
-Proficient in the acquisition and analysis of high throughput sequencing data
-Experience with bioinformatics techniques and tools used in molecular biology and genomics
-Expertise in NGS tools such as BWA, Samtools, Picard, GATK and software CLC Workbench, Partek
-Proficiency in any one of these languages Python, Perl, Java, C/C++, and using and developing R and Bioconductor packages in the analysis of biological data
-Experience in training biologists and bioinformaticians in the use of bioinformatics tools
-Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Macro
-Good working knowledge of current best practices in genetic variant discovery, CNV and validation methods
-Strong written and verbal communicator
-Good work ethic with emphasis on execution
