Lead Bioinformatics Programmer (Machine Learning Scientist in Computational Biology)

Baylor College of Medicine
Molecular Physiology and Biophysics
United States TX Houston

Description

We are looking for a talented and motivated machine learning scientist to join our team. The candidate will be responsible for analysis and modeling of genomics data. This will primarily involve deploying existing machine-learning libraries and deep neural-network architectures for genomics data. However, the candidate will also implement new models and architectures that the lab conceives. Prior background in molecular biology and genomics is a plus, but not required. Experienced candidates will have the opportunity to initiate their own independent research project. The candidate will also have access to high performance (CPU/GPU) computational facilities, opportunities to collaborate with other computational and experimental researchers at BCM, opportunities to attend in relevant conferences (e.g., NIPS or the conferences at CSHL) and network within the academia and industry. The candidate is welcome to discuss with the PI other opportunities that they think would advance their professional goals. The PI is not only committed to serve as your scientific mentor and computational colleague, but will also be a strong advocate for your interests to learn new skills and develop your own career portfolio.

Candidates with a PhD and prior experience in (a) computational modeling of genomics data, or (b) computer vision, or (c) natural language processing, will have the opportunity to pursue their own innovative ideas (in parallel to the responsibilities described above) that broadly align with the lab’s goals.

Duties:
• Prepares detailed specifications and algorithms from which programs will be written.
• Applies existing custom bioinformatics software to both well-defined and complex problems.
• Designs, codes, tests, debugs, and maintains programs and research software for bioinformatics applications.
• Researches, assesses, imports, configures, and customizes third-party bioinformatics software.
• Advises on hardware and software decisions related to efficient application of implemented software.
• Provide technical guidance and work direction to lower level bioinformatics and information systems personnel.
