CU Cancer Center is a consortium of approximately 261 researchers and physicians at three state universities and three clinical institutions, all working toward its vision to prevent and cure cancer while being a global model for patient care delivery, interdisciplinary research, and training.



The Bioinformatics Core of the Biostatistics/Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BBSR) is administered by the Cancer Center and is looking to hire a highly motivated individual to join the Core as a Bioinformatics Specialist / Data Analyst. The Core is conducting cutting-edge bioinformatics and translational cancer research serving Cancer Center members by providing them with bioinformatics support for their research activities and acting as a “connector” to bridge between experimental and clinical research.



This position will be expected to participate in and develop novel bioinformatics and computational tools to assist in the analysis and interpretation of high-throughput “omics” data. The candidate will be expected to assist Cancer Center members in performing complex data analyses, developing and implementing new computational/bioinformatics tools, and assisting investigators to analyze and interpret data in a timely manner.

In addition, this position will be expected to help and maintain the Core’s iLab profile which is used for tracking service activities.



Examples of Work Performed

Performing bioinformatics analysis with special programs and pipelines
Data mining on public data sets
Implementing bioinformatics solutions with different computer languages
Fully understanding data structures and applying and manipulating them to biological data
Annotating data and methods for record keeping
Assisting in writing papers and grants
Managing the Core’s iLab profile to insure appropriate tracking of service activity
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The candidate must have excellent programming skills pertaining to bioinformatics research. The candidate must have excellent computer programming and database management skills. The candidate must have good knowledge in bioinformatics/computer science/data science/programming skills. The candidate must be able to work in multi-tasking environment, and good communication/presentation skills.

Excellent organizational, record keeping (both data and methods) and communication skills.
Knowledge and experience in next generation sequence analysis
Ability to multi-task.
Ability to develop new techniques and methods through literature searches and work effectively to assure rapid research progress.
Ability to work collaboratively is essential.
Ability to meet project deadlines
Ability to work in a team science setting and be a team player.
Flexible and able to communicate and motivate collaborative partners; must possess ability to work independently and effectively to develop new techniques; be self-motivated; demonstrated successful planning and management skills in behavioral research and/or research projects.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Candidate must have a B.S. degree in Bioinformatics/Computer Science/Information Technology/Data Science or a related discipline (computer science, statistics, biology, physics, and mathematics).
Strong computer programming (perl/python, C/C++, Java, Matlab/R), familiar with Unix/Mac/Windows and analytical skills are required (please make this clear on your resume/CV).
Desired Qualifications

Prior research experience working with bioinformatics, data mining, machine learning and/or microarray / next-generation sequencing data is preferred.
Strong computer programming skills is a plus.
Experience in next-generation sequencing and microarray gene expression analyses is a significant plus.
Proficient with Microsoft software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook)
Experience in bioinformatics (as evidenced by publications in peer-viewed journals is a plus).
