The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH) performs research on computational biology and creates and maintains information systems and computational tools for the biological research community. The Information Engineering Branch (IEB) of NCBI aims to make biomedical data accessible and useful to scientific researchers, those in the public health field, and the general public through efficient and effective modern information technology (IT) practices and innovative design strategies. IEB production web sites are accessed, on average, by more than four million users who view 21 million web pages and download 100 terabytes (TB) of data daily.

The NCBI is seeking a Supervisory Bioinformatics Specialist to serve as the IEB Branch Chief, responsible for establishing IEB’s research priorities, supervising multidisciplinary work teams of more than 450 staff, and managing a complex program of basic and applied research. This position will facilitate continued collection and management of biomolecular and bibliographic data, provide access to core datasets and services, set strategic development priorities, and ensure that development targets are met on time and within budget. The incumbent will need to exercise scientific judgment and have a data science perspective to design, develop, and implement a biomedical research data infrastructure that meets the needs of NIH-supported researchers.

Candidates should have expertise in genomics and in the application of data science. Although located in NCBI, this position is pivotal to NLM’s future direction in data science of integrating genomic science within the broader ecosystem of journal and other bibliographic resources.

Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. National and meet required education and experience qualifications. While at least a 4-year degree related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences is required, a post-baccalaureate degree or advanced training in an academic field related to data science, bioinformatics, or computational biology is preferred. The successful candidate will have demonstrated the skill and ability to direct, organize, and coordinate large complex research and development projects and will have exceptional technical competence. Candidates should also have excellent written and oral communication skills and a proven ability to engage successfully with others to create useful resources and to achieve shared objectives. Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with education and experience.
