Description

The Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics, and Physiology Research Unit
located in Baton Rouge, LA, is seeking a permanent, full-time
Research Geneticist. The Unit has a wide-ranging basic and applied
program in breeding, genetics, reproduction, ecology, behavior,
mating technology, genetic and environmental management of honey
bees, and control of parasitic mites. The mission is to improve honey
bee health in support of U.S. agricultural production. The incumbent
will perform independent research and provide leadership of
scientific activities associated with the genetic and genomic aspects
of the mission of the laboratory.

Major Duties:

Identifies honey bee populations and genomic variants associated with
enhanced colony productivity and with resilience to health threats;

Contributes to translating fundamental research into improved honey
bees that are released to beekeeping industry;

Develops and evaluates selection based on genomic, proteomic or other
molecular markers as a potential means to increase breeding
efficiency of honey bees; and

Evaluates strategies to conserve genetic diversity in contemporary
queen breeding programs; or

Evaluates and enhances genetic mechanisms or genomic interactions in
support of honey bee conservation and breeding.

GS-12/13 level, with salaries ranging from $73,375.00 to $113,428.00
per year.


Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by 11:59 pm Eastern Time on the closing date of the announcement including the following specialized experience and/or education, as identified by grade level.

Your education and experience will be evaluated against all qualification requirements (basic and any additional requirements) listed below.
Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Basic Requirements:
Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.

Graduate Education: Genetics, or a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields such as agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics.

Additional Requirements:

GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Specialized experience requirements for the GS 12 level of this position are:
Conducting research related to genetics or genomics;
Conducting statistical analyses to quantify genetic or genomic variation;
Publishing research results on genetics or genomics in peer-review journals; and
Presenting research findings at scientific meetings.
GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience requirements for the GS 13 level of this position are:
Planning and conducting research related to genetics or genomics;
Leading a research team that conducts and reports research related to genetic or genomic variation;
Publishing research findings related to genetics or genomics as first author in peer-reviewed journals; and
Presenting research findings at national or international scientific meetings.
