The Genomics for Climate Change Research Center (GCCRC) is a joint research initiative between EMBRAPA and UNICAMP, co-funded by FAPESP, whose main goal is the genetic adaptation of crop species to stresses imposed by global climate change. The GCCRC operates based on an agricultural biotechnology pipeline that focuses at the creation of assets that will be transferred to the society and the agricultural sector. The GCCRC pipeline spans several phases, from the identification of candidate genes through the proof of concept under field trial conditions, and leverages a strong international network of collaborators, among them academic and private partners.

Understanding how plants evolve in limiting environments and undergo a series of morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular changes under stresses that adversely affect growth and productivity can contribute to shaping global food security over the next decades. The investigation of wild species such as extremophilic and desiccation-tolerant plants can provide knowledge as to whether plant tolerance to marginal environments is a matter of acquisition of novel genes or related to a set of common genes that are differentially regulated. The GCCRC seeks a bioinformatician or a computational biologist to join efforts in order to perform genome assembly and comparison of genome features including: (1) genome structure and overall genome statistics, repeats, genome rearrangement at both DNA and gene level, synteny, and breakpoints; (2) coding regions including gene content, protein content, orthologs, and paralogs; and (3) noncoding regions including the prediction of regulatory elements of different plants species of interest.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in genome assembly and comparative genomics. Candidates who are curious and willing to learn will have numerous opportunities to do so.
