Description

The Computational Biology Group at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich in Basel develops mathematical and statistical models and efficient algorithms for analyzing high-throughput molecular profiling data. We are particularly interested in evolutionary dynamics, including genomic and transcriptomic variation in viruses and tumors. Applications are invited for a position as a PhD researcher in computational oncology.

The open position is in the field of computational oncology and utilizing single-cell sequencing to understand tumor evolution. The goal is to develop statistical methods and models to analyze single-cell cancer genomics data; in particular to uncover the phylogenetic relationship between sampled cells. A further aim is to produce efficient computational tools to eventually support clinical diagnostics.

Our research group is in the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering of ETH Zurich, a major research university offering an excellent environment for innovative and collaborative research. The department is located in Basel, a European hot-spot for biomedical research, in close proximity of several academic research institutes and the pharmaceutical and biotech industry. We are also part of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, a major provider of bioinformatics services and resources.

Qualifications

Successful applicants have a strong quantitative background in computational biology, statistics, computer science, physics, mathematics, or a related field. Exposure to modeling biological systems and experience in developing software for their analysis are highly advantageous. Candidates are expected to engage in interdisciplinary research teams and to foster collaborations with computational biologists and clinicians.
