BACKGROUND:
The Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a Microbiome Research Associate to work at our location in the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) in Kannapolis. The NCRC is a public-private partnership between corporations, universities and healthcare organizations advancing science at the intersection of human health, nutrition and agriculture (www.ncresearchcampus.net).

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will have significant experience analyzing microbial genomics data sets. This position will provide research, consulting and technology solutions to support microbiome research and development projects. This position will also develop workflows for standard microbiome or metagenomics data analysis.


Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:
Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: i) analysis of large data sets generated from mixed microbial (metagenomic) communities from human sources, external environment or associated with plants or animals; (ii) use of next-generation sequencing to track development of antibiotic resistance or to link changes in microbial phenotype to the content of genes and genomes; (iii) source tracking of pathogens across space and time in the external environment or within industrial, agricultural or hospital settings; (iv) utilizing microbial genomics to for molecular epidemiological studies and precision medicine; (v) visualization of microbial datasets; (vi) use of computational tools to enhance agriculture and nutrition by manipulation of plant-associated microbes or gut microbiome.

The successful candidate should also have comfort in working from the command line in Linux or Unix environments. HPC experience is a plus. Thorough knowledge of at least one scripting language (i.e. Perl, Python, shell-scripting etc.) is a must as well as experience using R or SAS. Outstanding written and oral communication skills is also required as this position will interact with collaborators on projects and participate on grants and publications. The successful candidate must be a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder to comply with U.S. export policies.
