The University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Bioinformatics in the Division of Sciences and Mathematics in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (SIAS). This is a full-time position with a 9-month service period. The successful candidate will be an intellectually expansive scholar, with a proven record of research that uses bioinformatics, or comparable computational biology approaches, to address pressing problems in human health. We are especially interested in candidates capable of training undergraduate students in bioinformatics methods that will enhance their competitiveness and success in future health professional training programs, biotechnology jobs, and health-care careers. We welcome candidates with expertise in any bioinformatic and/or computational biology method(s) and encourage candidates that combine computational and experimental approaches to apply.
Candidates with experience in training and working with students from underrepresented and nontraditional backgrounds are of particular interest. In addition, the successful candidate will have experience or strong potential in teaching undergraduate courses with a diverse student population. The candidate will foster an inclusive classroom environment and incorporate evidence-based pedagogical techniques and technologies into their teaching. Pedagogical responsibilities include instruction of at least one of the following core classes in our Biomedical Sciences B.S. major: General Microbiology, Human Physiology, Cellular Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and/or Genetics and Genomics. The candidate will also develop and teach undergraduate elective courses consistent with their expertise and teach lower division majors and non-majors courses.
The candidate will be expected to perform university, department, and/or community service responsibilities consistent with their interests and abilities. The position begins September 16, 2018, and is contingent on funding. The position requires an earned doctorate (or foreign equivalent) at the time of appointment in a field appropriate for the teaching and practice of Bioinformatics or comparable area. Candidates in the final stages of their dissertation may be appointed on an acting basis.
