POSITION SUMMARY
The Scientific Computing Core of the Flatiron Institute and the SFARI Informatics group are jointly seeking a Flatiron Research Fellow to research and develop new computational methods for the identification and analysis of structural genomic variations (CNVs, rearrangements, transposable elements). These new methods will be applied to genomics data being generated from several large, ongoing clinical cohort studies supported by SFARI. This position will work closely with other research staff and software engineers at both the Flatiron and the Foundation to optimize algorithms and software for routine operational use. This position is a two-year appointment and may be renewed for a third year. The person in this position will be encouraged to disseminate their results through scientific publication, conferences, workshops and seminars.
Skills and Requirements Qualifications
Required:
* Doctoral degree in bioinformatics, computational sciences or related field
* 1–2 years' experience developing custom analyses for production use
* Extensive knowledge of computational genomics and experience with high-throughput data analysis
* Experience in Linux/Unix cluster environment
* Experience with Python and Java
* Strong background in algorithm development, statistical methods and machine learning
* Outstanding personal initiative and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred:
* Familiarity with C++, Perl, Matlab and R
* Familiarity with databases — relational and noSQL — cloud computing and web services
