The USC Davis School of Gerontology is seeking a Bioinformatician to join its team! This is an opportunity for a reliable and self-motivated person to participate in cutting-edge aging research and help enhance it in the post-genomic era.
Primary responsibilities are to conduct research, design experiments, as well as programming code to accomplish genomic and statistical analyses. The Bioinformatician will also be responsible for establishing the end points for pilot studies, guiding the development of genomic datasets, and analyzing these datasets. This includes data sets from ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, ribosome profiling, and ATAC-seq experiments from a range of organisms, as well as purified cells. The person will be involved in interacting directly with the other research teams in the USC Davis School of Gerontology and external collaborators to establish project goals, which the team can efficiently execute. Literature searches in particular program areas will be required to help guide project level goals and educate the project and team. As projects move from pilot studies to diagnostic development projects, this person will oversee the transition into development.
Key Job Responsibilities
Supervise and mentor a small team of data analysts and model builders who develop cutting edge statistical methods for “big data” biomarker discovery and diagnostic predictions
Operate a “core-like” service-based bioinformatic support service for scientists at the school of gerontology
Provide bioinformatics, biostatistical/epidemiological input for the design of new studies, and create appropriate analysis plans
Provide direction to all stakeholders on suitable risk/benefit trade-offs and promote appropriate creativity during the different phases of discovery, verification, development of biomarkers
Acquire specific knowledge through literature, discussions with key opinion leaders, and meetings; distill that information down for the project and informatics teams
Provide support for academic collaborations with key opinion leaders, including writing study design and statistical analysis plan sections for grant proposals
Provide study designs and guidance for quality control and development teams
Assist in statistical/epidemiological analysis of clinical collaboration and development projects
Our ideal candidate will possess a PhD, experience in Biostatistics, Bioinformatics or a related field. Experience with SAS, R or STATA. Successful completion of a Postdoctoral appointment. Proficiency in large-scale genomic data analysis and a good understanding of biological systems are required. Experience in programming and in statistical analysis is essential. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with members of research teams are essential to the success of the individual in this position. S/he will also possess experience in applying and implementing bioinformatics and statistical tools to analyze large datasets.
