SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics is a non-profit organization federating 65 Swiss research and service groups of experts in bioinformatics. SIB's 800 scientists join forces to empower advances in life sciences and health by providing life scientists and clinicians with state-of-the-art bioinformatics resources, services, expertise, and training.
The national research initiative Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN) is creating an infrastructure enabling the sharing of patient data for research across Switzerland. SIB is setting up and operating the Data Coordination Centre that will coordinate data standardization and enable nation-wide interoperability of health data for research.

Job tasks
The main contribution of the Health Research Data Coordinator is to coordinate the development and implementation of standards for data interoperability within the Swiss Personalized Health Network. She/he will be located at the Data Coordination Center (DCC) and closely collaborate with our partners at university hospitals and bioinformatics research groups on establishing semantic data interoperability. We are looking for an individual with strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills with demonstrated experience in providing solutions for clinical data management.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate the development, documentation and implementation of standards for data interoperability within the Swiss Personalized Health Network
- Interact closely with hospitals, research groups, and IT specialists in finding optimal solutions, act at the interface between relevant stakeholders
- Assess new research projects and related data management regarding syntactic (containers) and semantic (contents) requirements
- Contribute to development and implementation of evolving data management policies
- Responsible for the ongoing and timely ingestion and extraction of data, metadata, outputs, and reports associated with current research projects operating within the DCC
- Develop and organize educational opportunities about data management best practices, standardization, harmonization and interoperability in efforts to build a robust and sustainable culture within the SPHN.
Essential:
- Master’s Degree in Clinical Informatics, Data Sciences, Computer Science, Computational Science, or a similar field
- Experienced in use/development of data standards, ontology engineering and controlled vocabularies (e.g. ICD-10, SNOMED CT, LOINC, UMLS), semantic tools and technologies (e.g. Protégé, SPARQL, RDF/OWL)
- Several years of experience working with data management best practices in clinical research or life science setting; experience in a formal data management capacity an asset
- Ability to efficiently and effectively facilitate and support the data-centric workflows
- Appreciation of differences, needs and approaches in healthcare and medical research segments; understanding and awareness of Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) issues of handling human data in research
- Demonstrated knowledge of managing and maintaining the integrity both of quantitative and qualitative datasets
- Proven ability to build and cultivate strong relationships
- Fluent in English as main working language (oral and written)
Desirable:
- Experience in data-intensive biomedical research (e.g. PhD in bio- or medical informatics or closely related discipline or an MD degree with a strong emphasis on biomedical data or comparable)
- Familiarity with text processing applications of terminologies (information extraction, natural language processing, etc.)
- German and/or French
- Experience working in educational/academic environment
- Experience in programming, scripting and service oriented architectures
- Good knowledge of bioinformatics and medical research landscape in Switzerland
