BioEngineer / Fluidics Engineer

Autonomous Therapeutics, Inc.
United States SF & NYC

Description

Autonomous Therapeutics, Inc.
Brooklyn, NY and San Francisco, CA

About Us:

We’re a DARPA-backed startup founded by academics from Harvard and UCSF. Our goal is to change drug design and disease control—by developing the first mutating, ‘resistance-proof’ therapeutics to indefinitely control rapidly evolving pathogens and cancers.

Current drugs are static biological or pharmaceutical compounds. The problem is that these non-evolving interventions are used to target evolving disease targets that rapidly mutate across patients and populations. The mismatch between non-adaptive therapeutics and adaptive disease targets is the reason that many pathogens and cancers emerge resistant to drug control and untreatable.

We aim to end resistance by engineering (the first) mutating therapeutics—drugs that co-evolve with infectious diseases like HIV and Zika to maintain lifelong control. Imagine taking a drug (or flu vaccine) once in your life and never needing to worry about that disease or any of its evolved variants again.

We’re looking for talented engineers, biologists and mathematical modelers to help design these therapies and the new platforms (bioreactors) we’ll need to test them.

Benefits:

Our scientists and engineers are full-time employees with competitive salaries and stock options in an early rapidly growing company (with a number of first-in-class drugs in the preclinical pipeline).

We also offer health and dental benefits, 401k plans and cool places to work (e.g., Brooklyn and SF)!

For the academic-minded, you will be able to publish, present at conferences, attend DARPA workshops, and work closely with academic collaborators at seven institutions.

Qualifications

About You:

This ad focuses on the engineers who will help us build the bioreactors to test our therapies—enabling us to optimize the safety and efficacy of the therapies prior to animal and human trials.
An ideal bioreactor engineer has at least a BA (a Ph.D. is preferred) in bio or chemical engineering or a related field, and at least 3 years of hands-on engineering and wet-lab experience. Some of the specific skills you’d have are: engineering expertise in designing and integrating parts into prototype systems (e.g., CAD/Solidworks), bioreactor/fluidics expertise, virus cultivation training, as well as experience in bioinformatics, flow cytometry, and mammalian tissue culture.
If your background in engineering is especially strong and your interest in applying it to biology is high—we’d train you in the biology! That’s because, more important than your degree/experience, is your passion about designing new therapies and platforms to control deadly diseases. We’ll also teach you cutting-edge genomic and mathematical modeling—which you’ll use to track and predict therapy and viral evolution of time.
