A position as a graduate student (licentiate, 2 years) is available at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) in Stockholm, a Swedish national resource center for life science research. We are looking for an enthusiastic graduate student to join the lab of Associate Professor Olof Emanuelsson, affiliated with the School of Biotechnology at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm.

The work will consist of bioinformatics method development for massively parallel sequencing data ("next-generation sequencing" data), with particular focus on RNA-seq, including allele-specific expression (ASE) and transcriptome assembly. Method development includes e.g. programming, statistical analysis, machine learning (e.g. deep neural networks), and visualization of results. You will also use your own and other methods to analyze transcriptome data from our collaborative projects with groups at Karolinska Institute (inflammatory processes in cardiovascular disease) and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU (cone setting in spruce, and gene clustering in the model plant Arabidopsis). All projects are collaborations with experimental groups.

Note that this position as a graduate student is a licentiate positions. This means that you will be employed with the aim set on a licentiate degree, which normally is expected to be reached after 2 years. As a graduate student you will participate in research projects, attend relevant courses at graduate level, and follow the research field through e.g. literature and seminars. You will also have the possibility to participate in teaching, mainly as a teaching assistant at computer exercises, or to assume other departmental duties. The position could then be extended with up to another 6 months.


Qualifications

A suitable background for this position is a master's degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, bioinformatics, biotechnology, or related field. Experience from Unix (or Unix variant) and programming is a requirement, e.g. one or more of the following languages: Python, Perl, R, C, or Java. Knowledge about molecular biology is highly valued. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively is highly valued. Good command of written and spoken English is a requirement.
