A Wellcome Centre for Infectious Diseases Research in Africa (CIDRI-Africa) has been established at the University of Cape Town to augment acknowledged strengths in the basic and clinical aspects of infectious diseases research in the Faculty of Health Sciences. This prestigious award is the only one given to an organisation outside of the United Kingdom. Three interlinked platforms will support clinical studies in the community (clinical research), improve the depth of laboratory investigations for infected materials (BioSafety Level III) and advance cutting-edge integration of high-dimensional, big data (biomedical data integration). Each platform will be led by an established internationally recognized investigator based in the Faculty of Health Sciences and will include support staff. This post is for a Data Analyst (Bioinformatician) within the Data Integration Platform to support researchers in biomedical data management and analysis. The post is offered for a period of 4 years and will be affiliated to the Division of Computational Biology.
Responsibilities:
Provide support to scientists and clinicians in the management and analysis of their data
Collaborate with the Centre’s staff and students on their data analysis and interpretation
Set up and run pipelines and workflows, develop new methods where required
Set up and maintain databases or websites as required by the Centre’s projects
Train staff and post graduate students in bioinformatics analyses as required
Write up project reports and SOPs
Masters degree (PhD is preferable) in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics or a related subject
Experience in providing bioinformatics support
Experience in working with high-throughput biology data
Experience in analysis of one or more of the “omics” data types
Programming skills
Advantageous:
Knowledge of database or web development
Knowledge of Biostatistics
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Capacity to apply Bioinformatics across a broad range of application areas
